SMOKING
PREVALENCE IN 24 OECD COUNTRIES,
1975-2000
© Health New Zealand
Notes and
abbreviations
Apart from the US, UK and Nordic countries, few prevalence data are
available before 1975. Prevalence data for Greece and Turkey are few.
Youth data for Spain shows large fluctuations. Over 20 countries
provide sufficient data for adult prevalence to enable calculation of the
slope of trend from 1985-1995.
Different countries and
even different surveys within countries use different definitions of
smoker, by type of product and whether daily or “regular’. In
most cases the survey sample size is not available.
Countries can
nevertheless still be compared , by comparing the rate of reduction of
prevalence between countries over the same time period, or the average
annual rate of reduction.
M+F = male and female
prevalence averaged.
Eurobarometer This survey is of
adults age 15 and over, and of youth age 15-24 years.
TCCP = Tobacco Control Country Profiles. (ed. Corrao MA, et
al). Atlanta. American Cancer Society 2000.
