Dr Murray Laugesen is New Zealand’s most experienced researcher on smoking policy and cigarettes. He founded Health New Zealand Ltd as his research and consultancy company in 1995, after 18 years as principal medical officer in the Department, (now Ministry) of Health, and Public Health Commission. Since 1995, Dr Laugesen focused first on policy and policy advocacy (see www.endsmoking.org.nz ) and then research. (www.healthnz.co.nz/coynews.htm)  The aim is the same:  reduce cancer and heart disease and create a healthier, cigarette-free New Zealand. In 2006, he shifted office from Auckland to his home city, Christchurch.

1985  Wrote NZ’s first Comprehensive plan to reduce cigarette smoking, largely adopted by 1990.

1985-90 Advocated increased cigarette taxes. Lobbied for the current tax per gram regime.

1987 Obtained stronger health warnings on cigarettes, stating plainly Smoking causes lung cancer etc.

1989 Wrote Tobacco or Health – an end to tobacco advertising and promotion, a core policy defining the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990, won by Health Minister Helen Clark.

1991 New Zealand now had the lowest tobacco consumption per capita in the OECD.

1995 Wrote Tobacco taxation as a health issue resulting in increased tax on hand-rolled cigarettes.

2001 Founded Doctors for a Smokefree NZ. Gained 1000 doctors’ signatures for a law to make all workplaces smokefree; the law passed in 2003.

2003 Researched cigarette fire propensity: was due to use of accelerants in RYO cigarette papers.

2003 Researched A1 beta casein in milk. A1 casein per capita in milk accounted for 85% of inter-country variation in type 1 diabetes, and over half of variation in rates of ischaemic heart disease.

2005 Researched red meat fat: trimming of fat has greatly reduced meat fat consumption overall.

2006 Launched www.endsmoking.org.nz and countdown to ending cigarette sales within ten years.

2006 Researched Marlboro Ultrasmooth cigarette: “safer” cigarettes can never be sufficiently safe.

2007-8  For Ruyan in China, managed research on their new e-cigarette nicotine inhaler.
